3.7 Ultraviolet Irradiation
3.8 Mechanical Cleaning Systems

  3.2 Overview of Options

Unfortunately, there is insufficient data to establish the effectiveness of all currently suggested methods for improving the quality of dental unit water. Some methods are widely advocated while others are still in various stages of research.

The Six General Methods to Be Discussed Are:

1. Independent Reservoir Systems
2. Intermittent Chemical Treatment
3. Continuous Chemical Treatment
4. Filtration
5. Ultraviolet Irradiation
6. Mechanical Cleaning Systems

Discussion of the Six Methods Will Include:

- Description of the method.
- How the method works.
-
The effect on biofilm.
- Examples of available products.
- Cost.
- Points of caution.
