Oral healthcare workers’ (OHCWs) primary obligation is the timely delivery of quality care, within the bounds of the clinical circumstances presented by the patient. The provision of quality care depends on proper diagnosis, treatment planning, and implementation of appropriate preventive, therapeutic, or palliative and supportive strategies in the privacy of a comfortable and safe environment. While the transmission of pathogenic microorganisms in the oral healthcare setting is rare, cross-infection does present a potential hazard to patients and OHCWs alike. These clinical practice guidelines are prototypical of an effective infection control/exposure control program for the oral healthcare setting.
